1 Peter – Crowns!

Upon reading 1 Peter, it’s clear God is the father to Jesus, God is abundantly merciful, God is Holy, God is a giver, God is faithful, God resists the proud and God gives grace to the humble.  We read Jesus Christ is glorious, has no sin (blemish or spot), has existed before the world, endures forever, is gracious, has strength, has a controlled tongue, he bared a heavy load of sins, he hears the righteous prayers, he has suffered, he has preached, and he is sitting on the right hand side of God.  Also, we read the Holy Spirit was sent from heaven to be our comforter, to watch us and to prick and convict our hearts.

I have to say 1 Peter has been a real comfort to me while doing my bible study.

One of the many scriptures which spoke to me was:  1 Peter 5:1-4.

The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

It is my understanding that Christians will receive crowns at the Judgement seat of Christ. As read:

Revelation 4:1-11

1After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

There are five crowns which Christians can receive:

  • 1 Peter 5:4 the crown of glory (for building up the body of Christ)
  • 2 Timothy 4:8 the crown of righteousness (for eagerly looking for Christ to appear in the last days)
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:19 the crown of rejoicing (for being soul winners)
  • James 1:12 and Revelation 2:10 the crown of life (for not yielding to temptation)
  • 1 Corinthians 9:27 the crown of incorruptible (bringing our bodies under subjection)

From the Old Testament, we know Jesus is the Messiah who fulfilled prophecy. And we know from this and the New Testaments he will come again any day or any moment.

Isaiah 7:16

“For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.”

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Micah 5:2

“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

Zechariah 9:9

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

Isaiah 53-3:7

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

These are only a few verses which show Jesus fulfills prophecy and is indeed the Messiah who came to save a sinner like me.

We then read in the New Testaments, Jesus himself is wearing a crown.  He is wearing a crown of thorns straight to the cross for you and me.

Matthew 27:29

29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

Mark 15:17

17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

John 19:2

And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

The next time we read about crowns is when Jesus returns. Praise God!

Revelation 19:11-13

11And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

I pray I will receive crowns one day and be able to set them down at the feet of Jesus.

My prayer for you, is to lean not unto your own understanding and continue to search the living word of God for the truth.
