1 Samuel 18 My Study Notes

S.O.A.K method  Scripture which speaks to my heart, Observe, Application and Kneel in prayer

S: 1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.
3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul.

O: Jonathan was knit to the soul of David (knit: to unite closely) Jonathan and David were around the same age, perhaps 5 years apart, they were both bold and they both loved and served the Lord. (we read about Jonathan is chapter 14 and in verse 6 – how he was both bold and loved and served the Lord. *****And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few). Jonathan knew the heart of David after David spoke of the Lord. They both had the same heart and therefore, Jonathan chose David to be his friend. Because of this, there was no jealousy between them. I think it’s important to remember there is a clear difference between the jealousy of God and the jealousy of man. As we know in the ten commandments: You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me (Exodus 20:4,5). God’s jealousy is a holy jealousy. Man’s jealousy is a desire to seek something more than the desire to seek God or move with envy.

A: I think it’s very important as a Christian to allow God to pick your friends. You want friends with a heart who follows the Lord. As long as you seek to be like Christ and follow the Lord, then jealousy won’t be a part of your life.

K: Father, please give me a heart which seeks after you and friends in my life who feel the same way.

May you continue to search the word of the living God and not lean unto your own understanding.
